3 Signs Your Inverter Air Conditioner Has A Faulty Compressor

Inverter air conditioners are among the most efficient cooling systems on the market. The inverter technology matches the speed of the compressor motor to the required output. When the cooling load is low, the AC lowers the motor speed to conserve energy and maintain the set temperature. If your inverter AC has a bad compressor, it won't cool your home properly. Therefore, watch out for these three signs of a faulty compressor in an inverter air conditioner. 

Inefficient Cooling Throughout the Home

Is your air conditioner not cooling the home as efficiently as it should? Is the unit blowing warm air even after setting the thermostat? This is a sign of a faulty compressor. If the compressor is leaking refrigerant, there won't be enough coolant to absorb heat from indoor spaces. The air conditioner will blow warm air or take longer than usual to cool the air to the desired temperature. You should repair the broken refrigerant line and recharge the system to restore efficient cooling. 

Air Conditioner Cycling On and Off

Inverter air conditioners do not cycle on and off like conventional cooling systems. Once the AC cools the home to the desired temperature, the compressor motor slows down to a low speed instead of shutting off. Therefore, if your unit is cycling on and off every few minutes, its compressor is overheating. The following are the causes of overheating and short-cycling in an AC: 

  • Low refrigerant: Refrigerant leaks strain the compressor and cause it to overheat. The unit shuts down to protect the compressor motor from failure and turns on once the system has cooled down.
  • Broken fan motor: If the fan motor is faulty, the fan will stop cooling the compressor. Thus, the compressor will overheat and shut down.
  • Clogged air filter: A blocked air filter can impede airflow into the home, forcing the compressor to overwork at high speeds to cool down the indoor spaces. This causes the unit to overheat and turn on and off intermittently. 

If your air conditioner is cycling on and off, shut it down to protect the compressor motor from damage. 

Strange Noises in the Outdoor Unit

The inverter technology enables air conditioners to operate quietly because the motor starts smoothly and slows down once the optimal indoor temperature is achieved. Therefore, if your outdoor unit is producing banging or humming sounds, it has a defective compressor. Electrical faults, refrigerant leaks, and clogged components are the most common causes of these unusual sounds. You must troubleshoot and repair the compressor to restore quiet operation.

A faulty compressor can ultimately halt cooling operations and cause damage to other AC components. Therefore, if you notice the above signs, turn off the unit and call an air conditioning repair technician.
