What To Do When Your Air Conditioning Won't Run Cold
It's a great feeling to be able to walk over to your thermostat, click a few buttons, and feel refreshingly cool air start to blast through your vents. A hot day becomes much more bearable when you can go inside of the house and be greeted with that cold breeze. However, things can get a bit frustrating when you're expecting the air pumping through your house to be one temperature, and it just can't reach the mark. Dealing with warm air that should be cold can be almost as bad as having no air at all. Here's what you can do when your air conditioning just will not run cold.
Put Some Tint On Your Windows
While that sunlight can provide great lighting when you're trying to conserve energy, it can also be counterproductive when it comes to keeping a house cool. All of that great sunlight that is being streamed into your home is essentially fighting against your cooling unit. Your air conditioner might not have the power to win the battle, especially if you live in an older home.
What you want to do is block out some of the rays that come in during the hottest times of the day. You can do this a number of ways. The quickest way is to simply close your curtains, blinds or drapes. If you still want to enjoy some of the sunlight while minimizing the heat gains that can come from it, consider adding a thin layer of film to your windows. Window tint can be found at nearly any hardware store and only takes minutes to apply. It's an inexpensive technique you can use to keep that scorching heat from ruining your indoor climate.
Get Rid Of The Clutter
If your cooling unit is situated outside it can be very easy for grass and foliage to begin to clutter the space around the appliance. As this happens, dirt and other forms of debris can build up on the condenser coils of your device, making it nearly impossible for the unit to work the way that it should.
Take a look at the back of your cooling unit to see if it's mucked by debris. If so, call up a heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) expert to come and safely clean it out for you.
